Breaking the Stress Cycle: How to Release Tension and Restore Balance
When we experience stress, our nervous system activates the fight, flight, or freeze response. But stress doesn’t resolve just because the stressful event ends—we need to actively complete the cycle to signal to our bodies that we are safe again.
How can we do this?
Move Your Body – Exercise, dance, stretch, or go for a brisk walk to release built-up stress.
Breathe Deeply – Slow, intentional breathing (like belly breathing or box breathing) helps calm the nervous system.
Laugh or Cry – Emotional release is a powerful way to process stress. A good cry or a deep belly laugh can do wonders.
Connect with Others – Hugging, talking to a loved one, or feeling seen and supported can help regulate your nervous system.
Engage in Creativity – Art, music, or writing can give stress an outlet and help you process emotions.
Practice Physical Affection – Cuddling a pet, getting a massage, or even placing a hand over your heart can signal safety to your body.
When we allow our bodies to fully complete the stress response cycle, we prevent stress from getting stuck. Try adding one or two of these practices to your daily routine and notice how your body responds!
